Own a piece of Chico History! The El Rey Theater has gone by a few names in its lifetime, the Majestic Theatre, The National, The American, and finally the El Rey. Through all of the changes, it’s maintained its long tradition of film screening and a performance venue. Originally commissioned to be built by the Chico Elks Lodge in the Spring of 1903, it opened its doors for the first time in 1906 as the home of the Chico Elks Lodge 423. The first floor, at street level, was leased to the Majestic Theatre Company which opened The Majestic Theater in Spring of 1906. The current owners began the renovation and restoration of the historic theater in 2017, investing in an entirely new state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and a high-definition LED video wall production. As a result of the remodel, the El Rey has become a popular performance and event venue, and with more renovations an expanded income is highly possible. This property also includes two additional street-facing suites. One unit is a food and beverage store, and the other is set up for a retail store, allowing for additional income opportunities. From the beginning until today, The El Rey Theater has not only provided community performance and cinema space for the city of Chico, but it has also served as a historic landmark that binds the entirety of its downtown cityscape.
